With a GPU, a graphics card solves complex algorithm whereas in ASICs mining, a chip solves the complex algorithm, both in order to gain rewards. The basic difference is that while GPUs are fast, ASICs are much faster. But while GPUs are relatively flexible, ASICs are limited to a narrow set of functions.

Although an ASIC can be built to provide optimal hashrates on an algorithm, the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) is much more powerful than the CPU, and more flexible than an ASIC in their application. The GPU is the chip that enables graphics cards (often called GPUs for brevity in mining circles) to perform Aug 01, 2018 Main Difference Between FPGA and ASIC Mining During the last years, the bitcoin mining ecosystem has been experiencing important changes. Makes even more sense given the number of 7950's I've had with similar ASIC quality numbers, but on different PCBs, when you add in power consumption figures of each card. "Higher" ASIC % listing = higher power consumption from what I've seen. Do keep in mind what is listed in GPU-Zit doesn't explicitly state that higher = better. In an interview recently with Sazmining’s William Szamosszegi, host of the Sazmining Podcast and CEO of Sazmining, William asked Frontier Mining CGO, Kyle Herron, about cryptocurrency mining and blockchain.
